Our Background

Habitat in Oxford, MS, was founded in 1988 to provide basic, economical housing to deserving low-income families in Lafayette County.  We have built 15 homes since then; all are currently occupied.  The new owners were given no-interest mortgages, and payments have been successfully maintained.  Many repair and renovation projects – like ramps for handicapped access — for existing houses have also been completed.

In the future, we anticipate starting construction of House #16.

We are affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International, a global nonprofit working in approximately 70 countries, but our focus is completely local.

Habitat is an ecumenical Christian housing organization, but welcomes all who want to be a part of this effort, regardless of religious preference or background.

How We Operate

We work to construct affordable housing with sponsors and volunteers from the community.  Low-income families selected for home ownership contribute at least 500 hours of labor and assume all responsibility for mortgages when they take possession of the property.  Monthly payments are usually $500 or less.
